Hard Drive Duplicator Frequently Asked Questions

Q. What is the difference between the Pro and Deluxe model?
A. The Deluxe model can only use 2.5" and 3.5" SATA hard drives. In the Pro model, the user is able to use 2.5" and 3.5" SATA and IDE hard drives. The Pro model uses a tray system and is also has the capability to copy encrypted hard drives.

Q. Are there any drive size limitations when using the HDD Duplicator?
A. There are no drive size limitations for the HDD Duplicator.

Q. Can the HDD Duplicator duplicate both IDE and SATA hard drives?
A. The HHD Duplicator Deluxe does not have the capability. However, the HHD Duplicator PRO is able to duplicate SATA to IDE or vice versa. The PRO model comes bundled with one Diamond IDE drive enclosure, which can use as a source or a target. If you need to duplicate more than IDE HDD, you would need an additional Diamond IDE enclosure (DICSB).

Q. What kind of hard drives do the HDD Duplicator support?
A. The HDD Duplicator Deluxe can only support 3.5" and 2.5" hard drives. The HDD Duplicator Pro can support 3.5" and 2.5" SATA and IDE hard drives/SSD.

Q. Does the HDD Duplicator support SCSI hard drives?
A. No. It does not support SCSI hard drives.

Q. Can the HDD Duplicator be used to copy failing drives, i.e. bad sectors, I/O errors with reading the source drive.
A. No. Unfortunately, we cannot guarantee that the duplicator will be able to duplicate failing hard drives.

Q. Is it possible to duplicate hard drives with an encryption?

A. Yes. This will require an additional Diamond Cipher enclosure (DCSACS256) and a key that matches the encrypted hard drive. With the Cipher enclosure and the key, you will be able to access the data on the encrypted hard drive to duplicate.

Q. Does the HDD Duplicator require any software?

A. No. The HDD Duplicator does not need any software to duplicate hard drives. The HDD Duplicators uses a LCM console to configure the settings.

Q. How long does it take to duplicate a hard drive?

A. The duplicator supports up to a 1.5Gbps transfer rate. The actual speed depends on the hard drives used.

Q. Why does the duplicator say the target drive is smaller than the source drive even though the hard drives are the same size?

A. Different manufacturers might label their drives with the same capacity but it does not necessarily mean they are identical. There could be situations where the drives are labeled the same but still have a slightly different capacity.

Q. Can the HDD Duplicators compatible with disks using a RAID system?
A. Yes, the Addonics HDD Duplicators are able to copy hard drives used in a RAID system.

Q. My target drive and source drive are the same model and size. But the duplicator keeps showing the target drive is not ready?

A. Even though the drives are labeled the same, there might be slight discrepancies. The number labeled on the hard drive is actually estimation. The target drive might just be slightly smaller than the source drive.

Q. Isn't the duplicator doing the same thing as copying and pasting a file?

A. The duplicators are actually doing more than just copying and pasting files. It also has the capability to bitstream copy the hard drives. It copies the entire hard drive including the blank spaces. This allows analysis of all parts of the hard drive and not only the files that currently exist.
