Q. I have my drive cradle connected to a PCI IDE host controller. The device manager under Windows shows the drive . But there is no drive letter.
A. Your host controller BIOS probably does not support non-DMA hard drive, change the setting on JP3 and JP4 on the PCB inside the enclosure to enable the DMA.

Q. Why does the computer not recognize my Pocket ExDrive and Combo Hard Drive?
A. Check the Power Switch, Jumper Settings, Power Source. Make sure all cables are properly connected. If you have a PCMCIA interface cable, make sure that the PCMCIA card is fully inserted into the computer's PCMCIA socket.

Q. I connected my exdrive or combo drive kit to my computer, drivers installed fine, I have power to the drive and all cables are connected properly however I do not have a drive letter for the hard drive to access it?
A. Make sure that the hard drive you connected is already partitioned and formatted. If the hard drive came from a Windows NT machine, check to see if it is using an NTFS partition. You will need to repartition the drive in order to access it from windows 98, se, me. Click here http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;q255867 for more info about partition and format.

Q. My Windows 2000 machine installed and recognized my drive from device manager. However there is no icon.
A. Go to control panel, administrative tools, computer management and disk management. You should see a DISK 1 or DISK 2 depending on how many drive is connected to your computer. Double check the size and brand of the hard drive that you are using. Most of the time if there are only 2 hard drive connected to your computer, DISK 1 will be the external drive. Right click on the DISK1, click on create signature then create a partition then format the drive.

Q. I have a drive that is more than 32G however Windows2000 only allows me to partition at maximum of 32G.
A. Under windows2000, the limit for a FAT32 partition is only 32G. If you want to partition a drive more than 32G, you will need to use the NTFS partition.

Q. I bought a new hard drive for this drive kit. Why can’t I see the drive letter in Windows Explorer?
A. The reason why you don’t see the drive is that the new drive is not partitioned. You need to create a partition then format the drive.

Q. How do I partition and format my PCMCIA, 1394 or USB Personal Storage device in Windows?
A. The 1394 and USB drives are pre-formatted in FAT 32. To format and re-partition the 1394 or USB Personal Storage in Windows XP or 2000 use Disk Management. To format and re-partition in Windows 98 SE or ME you should use FDISK.

How to format and re-partition the drive in Windows 98 SE and ME

Note: If you are running either Windows 98 SE or ME edition, it is recommended that you obtain an updated version of the FDISK and FORMAT utilities included with Windows. The update allows the FDISK and FORMAT utilities to report the correct disk capacity on the screen. Update information is available on Microsoft's support web site at:

http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q263/0/44.ASP
http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q263/0/45.ASP

1. Click on "Start", "Programs", "Accessories", and "MS-DOS"

2. You will need to run FDISK from the DOS prompt.

3. For information on how to format using FDISK please refer to:

Q. What jumper setting should I have my drive in the kit?
A. Your hard drive jumper setting must be set to MASTER. If you set it to SLAVE, the drive will not appear in the device manager.

Q. What is the correct way to UNPLUG the drive kit under Windows 98SE/Me/2000?
A. In your taskbar you will see an icon with a green arrow. This is an icon that gives you control to eject a plugged hardware. To eject the drive kit, just click on it once and a new window will pop out illustrating "STOP IEEE 1394 [Disk/CDROM] - Drive (drive letter)". Just select the appropriate drive letter and you should get a window below for confirmation when you get that window just press ok and you can now physically unplug the Drive Kit.

Q. My computer locks during the boot once the drive is installed.
A. Make sure that the computer has the parallel port mode in the BIOS of the computer set to EPP if that is not available, please select bi-directional.

Q. I connect a 12 GB Hard Drive in the ExDrive case via PCMCIA connection. When I go to FDISK, it only reads the drive at 600 MB.
A.If you are seeing this problem, do not use FDISK to partition your Hard Drive. Here is what you should do:

1. Download our PCMCIA driver from our web site or use the driver disk you have.
2. Open up Windows9x folder (DO NOT install the driver if you don't need to).
3. Run STFDISK2.BAT file.
4. It will run the same as FDISK, but, it should also recognize your drive size correctly.

Q.How do I set a Cardbus/PCMCIA cable if I have one?
A. You might have a dual-mode Addonics PCMCIA/CardBus adapter. Look at the top of the card label, does it say "CARD BUS" under the Addonics logo? Both the Combo Hard Drive and the Pocket ExDrive must have an external power adapter attached for the CardBus mode to work. Luckily, this adapter can be used in either CardBus or PCMCIA mode.

You need to make sure that the card is operating in the appropriate mode by checking the tiny switch in the base of the adapter cable:

This switch needs to be in the correct position for it to work properly:

Near BUMP is CardBus mode; this mode will always require power adapter connected to the drive..
Away from BUMP is PCMCIA mode (on many systems, the drive can be powered directly from the PCMCIA slot).

Q. Does the USB Pocket ExDrive kit works under Windows 95 and Windows NT?
A. No, the USB Pocket ExDrive does not work under Windows 95 and Windows NT.

Q. Does the USB Pocket ExDrive run without external power?
A. Depending on the power consumptin of your hard drive and the computer you are using. We have found most of 2.5" hard drive with capacity below 30G can be powered directly from the USB port on many desktop computer, Dell and IBM Notebooks. If your computer cannot power the USB Pocket ExDrive but happens to have two USB ports, you may consider ordering the optional Dual USB input power cable.

Q. Is the Firewire Combo Drive Compatible with I-Link port?
A. Yes, it is compatible as long as the computer is running Win98SE or higher.

Q. My Computer comes only with a 4 Pin IEEE 1394 or Firewire Port but the Addonics has a 6 Pin connector, how do I connect it?
A. The addonics Firewire cable has a Standard 6 Pin Connector, you need to get a 4 pin to 6 pin Firewire adapter to work with the kit. Click to see a sample picture of the adapter. you may purchase the adapter at www.cyberguys.com under cables-adapters.

Q. Do I have to use a specific brand hard disks to use the Combo Drive kit?
A. No, you do not need to use a specific brand of hard disk to use with the Combo Drive kit.

Q. Where can I purchase some accessories for my Combo Drive kit or Pocket ExDrive?
A. You can purchase them 24/7 at www.storageusa.com
